Partner 6 - Wageningen University (WU)
The Animal Breeding and Genetics group of WU has made a long-term commitment to genomics research to increase the understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying health and welfare of animals and fish. This is evident from the current position of the Animal Breeding and Genetics Group of WU as one of the worlds leading groups in chicken genomics and QTL mapping in farm animals. The group has extensive collaborations with the farm animal industry and aims to contribute to the sustainability of livestock and fish production through fundamental research and through MSc and PhD education and training. Facilities and experiences with regard to large-scale genotyping of microsatellites and SNPs are available including 12 PCR machines (96 and 384 well format) with a total capacity of over 8000 PCR reactions per day, an ABI3730 capillary automatic DNA sequencer and an ABI7500 real time PCR machine. The group also has a strong interest and experience in applied bioinformatics which is apparent from the local infrastructure and the publicly accessible genome databases ChickAce, PigAce, ChickFPC and ChickCmap. The group has also played a major role in the sequencing and analysis of the chicken genome and members of the group were co-author on the three Chicken Genome papers published in “Nature” in 2004. The group has previously been involved in eight EC funded projects and has been the coordinator of the Framework IV Biotechnology project (BIO4-CT98-207) entitled Mapping and molecular characterisation of quantitative trait loci controlling fatness in pigs.
