Partner 10 - The Agricultural Research Organisation, The Volcani Center (ARO)

ARO has a well-appointed laboratory engaged in microsatellite and SNP genotyping.  It has an ABI 7000 prism sequence detection system for high throughput SNP analysis, an ABI DNA 377 automated sequencer with the "GeneScan” and “Genotyper" software, a 96 and 364 well Hydra Pipettor, spectrophotometers, and PCR apparatus. ARO has access to the ScanArray 4000 Micro array Analysis System (Packard Biochip) at the Department of Biological Services of the Weizmann Institute of Science. At the same department the MassARRAY 7K system (Sequanom, USA) is available for genotyping SNP with Liquid Handler, Nanodispenser, SpectroCHIP and Genotype Analyser.  ARO has furthermore access to the University of Illinois bovine DNA microarray.  The Center has direct computer access to the Israel Cattle Breeders' Association (ICBA) Compac Alpha station 600/5/333 for heavy computing; and the ICBA milk recording and pedigree data banks, including nearly complete data on each insemination of each cow, and somatic cell records for each cow. A Unix workstation with Staden package is also available for bioinformatic analysis.  ARO has a genetic sample base consisting of 6000 Israeli Holstein cows and 430 sires with genetic evaluations.
