Partner 12 - Genus plc (Genus)

Genus is a leading company in the creation of value through the application of quantitative genetics and biotechnology to animal breeding. In pigs, this is done through its subsidiary, PIC, the world’s largest pig breeding company with wholly owned businesses in the following European countries; UK, France, Benelux, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Czech, Romania and Russia. PIC was established in 1962 and has more than 15 years experience in DNA marker development and marker assisted selection in pig breeding. Using its commercial contacts, PIC, will identify producers and abattoirs in three major European pig-producing countries, chosen to represent the most important pigs breeds used in Europe for a variety of end-product requirements (e.g. fresh, dry cured and cooked ham) and will collect phenotypic data for stress, agression and meat quality assessment and tissue samples for differential gene expression experiments.
