Partner 15 - The Research Institute for the Biology of Farm Animals, FBN-Dummerstorf (FBN)
FBN exploits interdisciplinary synergisms arising from disciplinary approaches of its research units. The Research Unit Molecular Biology, FB3.0, aims to elucidate genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of expression and inheritance of selected traits for improvement of animal health, fertility and productivity by applying map-based top-down as well as function-oriented bottom-up approaches. Within SABRE FBN intends to demonstrate and evaluate foetal programming in pigs in order to develop tools to better fit the environment to the animals´ genetic make-up and to improve animal welfare and economics at the same time. The contribution towards identification of genes affecting productive adaptability of pigs addresses the same overall target.
FBN has been a partner in EU funded projects including BovMap, GenetPig, AvianDiv and EADGENE and is co-ordinating the project PorDictor (QLK5-CT-2000-01363).
The Research Unit Molecular Biology is well equipped for molecular genetic analysis. A team of skilled laboratory assistants is familiar with all aspects of molecular biology. Technical facilities relevant to SABRE cover microarray readers and hybridisation and washing equipment (Affymetrix ArrayScanner; ~ GeneChip Scanner; ~ Hybridisation Oven, ~ Fluidics Station) different automated sequencers (ABI PRISM 310, ABI PRISM 377, LICOR 4100, ALFexpress, MegaBACE 750), LightCyclers, and pyrosequencer. The Research Unit Molecular Biology is headed by Klaus Wimmers
