Partner 17 - The University of Bonn (Bonn)
Bonn is a research oriented organisation which encompasses the Faculty of Agriculture (in addition to other six faculties), under which the Institute of Animal Science is working. The Institute of Animal Science has a long standing research experience in molecular genetics in pigs, poultry, cattle and sheep. The pig research activities focus on the molecular genetic analysis of functional traits related to meat or carcass quality, fertility, fitness and disease resistance. The bovine research activities focus on pre-implantation embryo genetic analysis with the aim of understanding the molecular aspects of fertility in cattle. To accomplish these research activities the institute has a well equipped molecular genetic lab and a research farm, in which various experimental animals (pigs, cattle, sheep and poultry) and one IVF-lab are located. The IVF-lab is fully equipped to accomplish OPU, IVF, embryo freezing, embryo-splitting and biopsying, transvaginal endoscopical oviduct flushing as well as non surgical embryo transfer. This biotechnological competence is combined with molecular embryo analyses expertise like cDNA microarrays, mRNA-differential display, real time quantitative PCR, suppression subtractive hybridisation, cDNA-libraries from preimplantation embryos, sequencing and SNP-detection and association studies.
