Partner 20 - University of Copenhagen Faculty of Life Sciences (formerly the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (KVL))

KVL’s Laboratory of Genetics has been engaged in porcine gene mapping and genome analysis from the outset of international collaboration within this research area. The laboratory has previously been engaged in three EU financed projects within the field (PiGMaP, PiGMaPII, GenetPig). It is presently involved in international collaboration aiming at sequencing the porcine genome. The laboratory has a wide range of scientific/technical skills in molecular biology, genome analyses and animal genetics. The main interests of the group are mapping and characterization of genes of importance to production traits and diseases in the pig. Specific emphasis is directed at elucidating the molecular mechanisms involved in host-pathogen interaction with respect to infectious diseases of major importance in pig production.  The expertise of the laboratory within the area of genome analysis includes: library construction and screening, sequencing, physical and genetic mapping, expression studies, gene silencing in cell cultures, qualitative and quantitative genetics and bioinformatics. KVL has well equipped laboratories for molecular genetics including facilities for DNA sequencing and microsatellite analysis using: ABI377 and ABI3100 DNA sequencer, ABI 877 robotic workstation and thermal cyclers, Q Pix Colony Picker and micro-arrayer, Mx 3000 qPCR equipment, Leica microscope and advanced computer processing equipment for fluorescence in situ hybridization. Furthermore, a local Linux cluster for sequence data management is available and in support of this, the laboratory has access to national supercomputer facilities.
