Partner 23 - Cogent Breeding Ltd (Cogent)

Cogent Breeding operates the largest Holstein progeny test scheme in the UK and is active in many other countries outside the UK. As part of the breeding programme, Cogent utilises the world’s largest female nucleus, based on a milking herd of 1200 Holstein cows. In July 2000 Cogent became the first company to commercially market sexed semen and is still the world leader in this field. Cogent Breeding contributes to the demonstration component of the project by fine mapping Chromosome 23 with a high density of SNPs and testing 500 unselected progeny from evaluated Holstein sires. This data will be valuable in establishing the density needed and power of the new tools available. The DNA information can then be evaluated on reliable data from progeny, spanning both production and disease, collected by Cogent on its own participating progeny test herds.
