Partner 24 - The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (SI)
The SI is one of the foremost genome centres in the world, dedicated to sequencing and the functional analysis of genomes. It underpins biological and medical research worldwide through large-scale analysis, focused research and collaborations. The SI has made the largest single contribution to the Human Genome Project, producing the finished sequence of one third of the human genome. The Institute has also made major contributions to elucidation of the sequence and annotation of the mouse and zebrafish genomes, in addition to the genomes of C. elegans, yeast and many bacterial and eukaryotic human and animal pathogens. Genome sequence analysis is complemented by computational interpretation and experimental analysis of gene function in a variety of model organisms including mouse, zebrafish, yeast and C. elegans. The Institute has followed up its contribution to the human genome project with investigations of human genome variation, participating in the SNP Consortium and the HapMap Project, extending this to studies of genetic variation in cancer and other diseases. A large data centre has been established for computation and data distribution. The latter has recently been extended and now encompasses 3,000m3 with at least 300 terabytes (Tb) of storage space available and a computer farm consisting of over 1,000 CPUs. The Institute hosts many international databases including ACeDB, Ensembl (joint project with EBI), pfam, rfam and GeneDB.
