SAC is one of Europe’s leading specialist institutions in science and technology – covering education, training, research and development, advice and consultancy in respect of agriculture and its associated industries, rural development, food production and the management of land and natural resources. SAC’s aim is to create, develop and apply knowledge, skills and understanding to enhance the sustainability of rural areas and communities and the viability of the industries on which they depend.
There are about 900 members of staff of which 90 are located in the Sustainable Livestock System (SLS) Research Group which is participating in SABRE. The SLS Group’s research is intended to deliver more sustainable systems of livestock production – systems that are economically viable, but also environmentally and socially acceptable. Relevant disciplinary strengths are in: Animal Breeding & Genetics: especially in designing more sustainable breeding programmes (programmes that are economically viable, improve health, welfare – and fitness related traits, socially acceptable and conserve genetic resources) and improving product quality; Animal behaviour and welfare – especially in understanding behavioural development and developing scientifically based and practical methods of assessing animal welfare.
