Founded in 1926, UFV is a governmental institution dedicated to teaching, research and extension and is one of Brazil’s best Universities. During almost 80 years of history, over 35 thousand students have graduated at the UFV. Currently, high quality teaching is provided to over 12 thousand students through 36 undergraduate courses. The university’s excellent undergraduate instruction is a result of its highly qualified faculty, infrastructure and scientific and technological research tradition. The graduate program comprises 26 courses (Master’s and Doctorate). UFV also harbors one of the best institutes of biotechnology applied to livestock. The Animal Science Department at UFV is involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and extension that focuses on the major animal species.
There are 31 faculties in the department (4 in animal breeding and genetics group) who carry out research in disciplines related to animal breeding and genetics, nutrition, physiology, reproduction, forages and management systems. Research in animal breeding and genetics is concerned with genetic evaluation, parameter estimation, QTL and candidate genes detection and genomic analysis in major animal species. The department has provided computer requirements to undertake the statistical and numerical analyses.
UVF will contribute to WP1 in numerical genomics and the staff member involved will spend part of the programme working with IPG contributing travel and subsistence costs.
